The Smithsonian Chamber Music Society celebrates Schubert and Beethoven on two successive mid-May weekends, using a variety of replica fortepianos by the finest contemporary makers of such instruments.
On Sunday evening 14 May, tenor Frank Kelley and fortepianist Kenneth Slowik will perform Schubert's 1823 cycle on poems of Wilhelm Müller Die schöne Müllerin. This is the final concert in the SCMS series for 2022-23. Tickets may be purchased at smithsonianassociates.org/ticketing/tickets/scms-schubert.
The following week, twelve scholarship Beethoven Fellows join a distinguished faculty exploring all of Beethoven's major piano trios in the 2023 Smithsonian Beethoven Academy. In addition to intensive coaching (by Vera Beths, David Breitman, Mike Cheng-Yu Lee, and Kenneth Slowik) and private concerts, the Academy offers these public events (no tickets or reservations required) in the National Museum of American History's Taubman Hall of Music:

On Saturday 20 May, beginning at 1:00, the Academy will offer "Beethoven Day at the Smithsonian," a marathon performance of Op. 1, No. 1 in E-flat Major; Op. 1, No. 2 in G Major; Op. 1, No. 3 in C Minor; Op. 11 in B-flat Major; the Op. 44 Variations; Op. 70, No 1 in D Major (the Ghost); Op. 70, No. 2 in E-flat Major; Op. 97 in B-flat Major, the Archduke; and Op. 121a, the Kakadu Variations.
