Douglas McNabney
Violist Douglas McNabney is one of Canada’s distinguished chamber musicians. He has toured extensively throughout Canada, Europe, and the United States, recording for, among others, BRT (Brussels), Radio Bremen, RTE (Dublin), Finnish Broadcasting (Helsinki), Sudwestdeutscher Rundfunk (Karlsruhe), Norwegian Radio (Oslo), Radio Sweden (Stockholm), NPR (USA), and Canada's CBC. His recording on the Oxingale label of the Mozart Divertimento with Jonathan Crow and Matt Haimovitz was nominated for a Canadian Juno Award in 2007 and he performed on the recent Dorian recording of Mahler with the Smithsonian Chamber Players that was nominated for a Grammy in 2008. Formerly artistic director of the Domaine Forget International Festival and Academy, he is currently coordinator of Chamber Music at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University in Montreal.
Douglas is in awe of the instruments in the Smithsonian collection, especially the decorated Strad viola and the huge Amati viola. He likes the big sound of these big instruments! When he’s not rehearsing, teaching, or practising, he's also a fan of big red wines…
