Anner Bylsma, Kenneth Slowik, & Steven Doane, violoncelli; Vera Beths & Jody Gatwood, violins; Lisa Rautenberg, violin & viola
Sony Classical SK64307
Dotzauer: Quintet in D Minor, Op. 134; Canon in G Major for 2 violins; Six Pieces for 3 Violoncelli, Op. 104; Three Etudes for Violoncello Solo; Quartet in F major for Violoncello Obbligato, 2 Violins, and Viola, Op. 64
This issue makes available a sample of Dotzauer’s chamber music which reveals the composer’s craftsmanship and rich imagination, qualities that Bylsma and his colleagues express most engagingly. The music’s satisfying warmth is vividly caught by the excellent recording which exploits these period instruments’ superb tonal and timbral qualities.
