Adrien-François Servais: Souvenirs & Caprices
Anner Bylsma, violoncello; Vera Beths, violin; Kenneth Slowik, violoncello; with the Smithsonian Chamber Players
BMG/deutsche harmonia mundi GD77108 or EMI CDC 7-49009-2
Music of Adrien-François Servais: Souvenir de Bade, Op. 20; Caprice sur des motifs de l'opéra Le Compte Ory, Op. 3; Souvenir de Spa, Op. 2; Two Caprices, Op. 11, Nos. 2 & 4; Grand duo de concert sur deux airs nationaux anglais (composed by Servais and Hubert Léonhard)
This disc represents several leading period-instrument players at their best. Anner Bylsma, playing the Servais Strad cello from the Smithsonian's collection, brings enormous élan and bravura to his parts well befitting their 19th-century Belgian virtuoso author. Kenneth Slowik, Vera Beths, and the Smithsonian Chamber Players display similar brilliance.
