Recordings

Recordings form an essential part of the activities of the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society. Our concerts are performed in acoustically appropriate, and therefore small, venues well suited to the repertoire we explore and the instruments and performance styles we employ. But through our recordings and broadcasts, we are able to offer those intimate concert experiences to large audiences around the world, thus helping fulfill the Smithsonian Institution’s mandate to promote “the increase and diffusion of knowledge.”

Recording Bach’s St. John Passion at the Renwick Gallery. The sessions began at 10:00 pm and ran into the early morning hours to minimize street and airplane noises. The room’s normal lights were left off to eliminate electrical hum.
